Located about 30 miles north of Belize City, Altun Ha was once an important ceremonial site for the ancient Mayan civilization. The “Jade Head” representing the Mayan sun god “Kinich Ahau” was the most significant find during excavation weighing nine and three quarters pounds. This Mayan side is surrounded by broadleaf rainforest and contains three main plazas with about thirteen temples and residential structures. After witnessing what Belize was like thousands of years ago, a short city tour of the Commercial capital allows one to experience modern Belize.
